Tens of thousands of Spaniards protest housing crunch and high rents in BarcelonaNow that he’s stepped back into the role of being a starter, Dalton Risner is working tirelessly to make sure he’s at his best for the Vikings. ADVERTISEMENT That could be easier said than done in the short term. After starting exclusively at left guard since entering the NFL, Risner got the start at right guard for the first time last weekend with the Vikings playing the Tennessee Titans. Though he said he was extremely grateful for the opportunity, Risner also admitted there’s a learning curve now playing a new position. Not that he’s complaining about his place on the offensive line. “It was awesome,” Risner said. “I’m really happy with how I played. A few things to clean up. I think I’ll only continue to get better.” ADVERTISEMENT After rewatching the game, head coach Kevin O’Connell praised Risner for the way he competed in the trenches. “He showed some of that veteran moxie to win some downs that were some hard downs,” O’Connell said. “There are some things he’ll continue to improve with the speed and physicality of it as he finds his groove.” The biggest hurdle for Risner is getting his mind to think in reverse. He has spent so much time at left guard throughout his career that switching over to right guard has forced him out of his comfort zone. “All of it is flip-flopped,” Risner said. “It’s not an easy process.” ADVERTISEMENT It was made even more difficult last weekend with Risner going up against the combination of star defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons and rookie defensive tackle T’Vondre Sweat. “That’s about as good of a pair as we’re going to find in the NFL,” offensive coordinator Wes Phillips said. “We knew it was going to be a challenge up front with those guys. There are some things we could’ve done better from a technique perspective. We expect these guys to respond.” That includes Risner as the Vikings prepare for the Chicago Bears on Sunday afternoon at Soldier Field. As he gains more experience at his new position, his hope is that it becomes second nature to him at some point soon. ADVERTISEMENT “I don’t know how many reps it’ll be or how many games it’ll be,” Risner said. I know I’ll consistently get more and more comfortable there.” Briefly The only player listed as a non-participant on the injury report was tight end Josh Oliver (wrist/ankle). He hasn’t practiced at all this week, so his availability for this weekend is very much up in the air. ______________________________________________________ This story was written by one of our partner news agencies. The late-season spurt provided another vote of confidence for coach Billy Napier, who is expected back for a fourth season. Ole Miss (8-3, 4-3), which entered the day as a 10-point favorite, lost for the first time in four games and surely will drop out of the 12-team playoff picture. The Rebels ranked ninth in the latest CFP and needed only to avoid stumbling down the stretch against Florida and lowly Mississippi State to clinch a spot in the playoff field. But coach Lane Kiffin’s team failed to score in three trips inside the red zone and dropped countless passes in perfect weather. The Hoosiers (10-1, 7-1, No. 5 CFP) had their best chance to beat the Buckeyes for the first time since 1988 but were hurt by special teams mistakes and disrupted by an Ohio State defense that sacked quarterback Kurtis Rourke five times. Jalen John led the Minutemen with 107 rushing yards and a touchdown. Georgia extended its streak of consecutive home wins to 30, the longest active streak in the Football Bowl Subdivision. The Volunteers (9-2) overcame a sluggish start to roll up the impressive win. Both teams were scoreless in the first quarter, but Tennessee found its rhythm. Grad student receiver Bru McCoy, who hadn’t caught a touchdown pass this season, had two. Peyton Lewis also ran for two scores. Tennessee’s defensive line, which had no sacks in last week’s loss to Georgia, had three against the Miners. UTEP (2-9) struggled with two missed field goals and three turnovers. Ward completed 27 of 38 passes, plus ran for a score. He broke two more single-season Miami records, both of which had been held for 40 years by Bernie Kosar — most passing yards in a season and most completions in a season. Ward now has 3,774 yards on 268 completions this season. Kosar threw for 3,642 yards on 262 completions in 1984. Demond Claiborne had a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown for Wake Forest (4-7, 2-5). (AP) — Kevin Jennings threw for a career-high 323 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another, and No. 13 SMU clinched a spot in the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game by routing Virginia. Isaiah Smith and Jared Harrison-Hunte each had two sacks to help the Mustangs (10-1, 7-0, No. 13 CFP) extend their winning streak to eight. They would earn an automatic bid into the expanded College Football Playoff by beating 11th-ranked Miami or 17th-ranked Clemson in the ACC title game on Dec. 7 in Charlotte, North Carolina. SMU had to get there first, and Jennings led the way again, bouncing back from an interception and a fumble to complete 25 of 33 passes to six different receivers, including TD tosses to Jordan Hudson and Matthew Hibner. Brashard Smith provided a little balance on offense, running for 63 yards and his 13th touchdown of the season. SMU’s defense overwhelmed UVa’s offensive line, sacking Anthony Colandrea nine times and allowing the Cavaliers (5-6, 3-4) just 173 yards. (AP) — Luke Altmyer found Pat Bryant for a catch-and-run, 40-yard touchdown pass with 4 seconds left, sending No. 24 Illinois to a wild victory over Rutgers. Illinois (8-3, 5-3 Big Ten) was down 31-30 when it sent long kicker Ethan Moczulski out for a desperation 58-yard field goal with 14 seconds to go. Rutgers coach Greg Schiano then called for a timeout right before Moczulski’s attempt was wide left and about 15 yards short. After the missed field goal was waved off by the timeout, Illinois coach Bret Bielema sent his offense back on the field. Altmyer hit Bryant on an in cut on the left side at the 22, and he continued across the field and scored untouched in a game that featured three lead changes in the final 3:07. Rutgers (6-5, 3-5) gave up a safety on the final kickoff return, throwing a ball out of bounds in the end zone as players passed it around hoping for a miracle touchdown. Altmyer was 12-of-26 passing for 249 yards and two touchdowns. Bryant finished with seven receptions for 197 yards.
Crystal Falls Forest Park didn’t just come to play. It came to win. Sending an emphatic message from the start, No. 3-ranked Forest Park left little doubt over which trophy it was after with a 42-20 victory over No. 7 Morrice in the eight-player football Division 2 state title game. “I told them before the game that I had two opportunities in this game as a player and came out on the losing end – I didn’t recommend it,” said fifth-year coach Brian Fabbri, who played on the 2004 and 2005 state runner-up teams at Forest Park. “I took a lot of life lessons from those games, but there has to be no better feeling as a player than to walk off that field with a win.” The state championship was the fifth for Forest Park (12-1), the Upper Peninsula school that has qualified for the playoffs 28 years in a row and has played in 15 state title games since 1975. The Trojans last won it all in 2017. RELATED : 9-minute march to history clinches 8P-D1 title A program that has finished as state runner-up a record 10 times, Forest Park looked like it was prepared to settle for nothing but the best this time around. The Trojans announced their presence with authority, delivering a tone-setting drive on the grand stage of the Marquette Superior Dome. Forest Park marched 53 yards on an impressive 12-play drive that included two fourth-down conversions, punching in a 4-yard touchdown by Grayson Sundell for the instant advantage. “That was unbelievable,” Fabbri said. “To go down and score, then see that kick go through, there’s nothing better than that. “I knew we were ready. We have a lot of seniors and you could tell they had that feeling of determination.” Then the Trojans gave Morrice (11-2) no chance to counter. Dietrich Rasner, who was 6-for-6 on PATs for the game, executed an on-side kick, giving Forest Park the ball back for another march. While it couldn’t cash in, Forest Park controlled the football for all but one play of the first quarter and had asserted its might. The Trojans showed also showed their quick-strike ability as Dax Hukki broke loose for a 58-yard touchdown run on their first play of their next possession. The tacked on an 8-yard score by Nik Stephens and a 4-yard TD from Hukki – with just 10 seconds left in the opening half – to build a commanding 28-0 lead heading into intermission. Morrice (11-2) battled throughout the second half, keeping the contest somewhat in doubt. Joel Fisher scored from 5 yards out to cap the opening drive of the third quarter and Wyatt Cartier scored a 1-yard TD to make it 35-14. And when Fisher returned a punt 85 yards for a touchdown, the Orioles had inched within 35-20 with 5:30 left in the game. But one minute later, Stephens found an opening and dashed 49 yards to the house for the 42-20 lead and the game-clinching margin. “Typically, we’re not known for our quick scoring ability,” Fabbri said. “But we had some people make some big plays, get some big blocks and we executed when we had to.” Hukki led the charge for Forest Park, rushing for 136 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries, while Stephens ran for 67 yards and three TDs on just six rushes. Vic Giuliani finished 4 of 4 passing for 60 yards at quarterback. The defense was fronted by Brody Starr and Kevin Giuliani with eight tackles while Matthew Showers and Stephens tallied seven apiece. Morrice, a young squad that was looking to join the 2018 team among the school’s all-time state champions, couldn’t recover from Forest Park’s dominating start. The Orioles did their best to fight back with their run-dominated attack but had too little, too late. Fisher finished with 99 yards on 12 carries and Cartier added 95 yards on 26 attempts. Morrice did not complete a pass in the game. Braden Hart notched 11 tackles to lead defensively while Cartier added 10, Fisher nine and Travis Smith eight. But it was Forest Park – and its nearby community – that was left celebrating under the dome at Northern Michigan University. “That’s what it’s all about, the kids,” Fabbri said. “That’s why we do this as coaches. We were all players and we had our opportunities. Now we want to see these kids experience this and make lifelong friends and memories.” If you would like your local high school sports news delivered free to your inbox daily, click here and sign up for one of our local high school sports newsletters. 11 states sue three largest institutional investors for anticompetitive trade practicesThe Qatar Research, Development, and Innovation Council (QRDI) has announced the results of the 16th edition of the Undergraduate Research Experience Programme (UREP) competition, hosted at the University of Doha for Science and Technology (UDST). This annual competition is aimed at inspiring undergraduate students to advance their research skills and academic careers under the guidance of faculty mentors. The participation involved in this year’s UREP was diverse, with students from five academic institutions in Qatar: Qatar University (QU), the UDST, Texas A&M University at Qatar (TAMUQ), Northwestern University in Qatar (NUQ), and Weill Cornell Medicine – Qatar (WCM-Q). The projects covered a vast majority of subjects ranging from environment and energy, social arts and humanities, biomedical and health, and information and communication technology. A panel of 14 judges evaluated the poster presentations, in addition to three judges for the oral presentations. Projects were assessed based on their significance, research outcomes, student learning experience, and presentation quality. The competition awards are divided into two categories: the poster presentation category and the oral presentation category. This year, Kareem Fanous, Yazan Kaddorah and Aimen Javed, with their mentors Dr Isra Marei, Dr Hong Ding and Prof Christopher Triggle from the WCM-Q, secured first place in the oral presentation category with their project titled *Interaction between Platelets and Endothelial Progenitor Cells: Role in Diabetes-Induced Atherogenesis. In second place, Diala Bushnaq, Raghad Aljindi, Reema al-Emadi, Sara Mohsen, Raghd al-Shamari and Malek Chabbouh, with their mentors Dr Shona Pedersen and Dr Muhammad Chowdhury from the QU, were awarded for their project on *eMindReader: A Deep Learning-Based Decoding System for Recognising Inner Speech in Complete Locked-In Syndrome Patients. Third place went to Nadine Elkholy, Haya al-Rewaily and Shouq al-Musleh with their mentors Professor Othmane Bouhali and Maya Abi Akl from the TAMUQ for their project on *Crystals Study: Positron Emission Tomography Simulations for Pediatric Applications. The competition also recognised the winners of the “Best Representative Image of an Outcome” (BRIO), which celebrates visual communication of scientific concepts and research in Qatar through art. The competition this year received 46 images and amassed more than 1,700 votes from the public and Qatar's scientific and academic communities. The top three BRIO contest winners were Dr Abbirami Sathappan, Dr Muftah El-Naas, and Dr Noor Ali al-Maslamani. As revealed by Express.co.uk, BBC production is said to have confirmed Farage's appearance on the panel before finding a combative left-wing politician to take him on to ensure a fiery debate. And that is certainly what they got, as the pair faced off against each other during Thursday's (December 5) show in a very heated clash. As the pair debated whether Labour's latest plan was a "bold strategy or cry for forgiveness," the conversation soon turned to Brexit. Campbell was seen lambasting Farage, who in turn dubbed the Tories "the mob, " before Fiona had to cut and stop the pair. The BBC frontwoman was seen holding out her arms in both directions to calm the pair down before demanding they “stop talking over each other”. Campbell was heard blasting: "You're somebody who would exploit any problem going for your own political ends. Brexit was a fundamentally damaging thing to this country. That was your one legacy. And you now don't even want to talk about it." Viewers had a lot to say about the exchange. “Farage seems to think he’s in Panto, with his exaggerated performance. Has he been booked for one yet?” blasted one fan. " Nigel Farage seems to be the only person making any sense on #bbcqt Jacqui Smith toeing the party line and Alastair Campbell still banging on about #Brexit," penned another. More chimed in: "Alastair Campbell and Nigel Farage are at each other's throats over Brexit . Nigel responds to the attacks by saying 'You’re the worst loser ever, it’s over! The war is over!'” Campbell continued: "I’ll tell you what you are, you’re somebody who will exploit any problem going for your own political ends. Brexit was a fundamentally damaging thing for this country. It’s made us poorer, weaker & it’s hit out standing in the world” However Farage fans praised his response, with another posting on X: " Nigel Farage COOKS Alastair Campbell over Brexit then ends it by mocking his illegal invasion of Iraq which killed millions: “It’s over. The war is over.” Joining Farage and Campbell are former Labour Home Secretary Jacqui Smith and Conservative MP Kevin Hollinrake. Farage’s relationship with the BBC has long been fraught with tension. Earlier this year, during a Question Time Leaders’ Special, he accused the broadcaster of having a “rigged” audience after facing hostile questioning and announced a temporary boycott of the BBC until an apology was issued. The former UKIP leader has also been a focal point of debates surrounding panel balance on the show. In May 2024, his 36th appearance reignited discussions about the frequency of his invitations versus the representation of other political voices. In June, Mr Farage appeared on the Question Time election special only to be met with an overwhelming hostile audience who did not give him a single round of applause. This row led to Reform UK announcing a boycott of the BBC for the rest of the election. He took to X to fume: “I have just been invited to appear on Laura Kuenssberg. I’m refusing until the BBC apologises for their dishonest Question Time audience. “Our state broadcaster has behaved like a political actor throughout this election. Reform will be campaigning vigorously to abolish the licence fee.”
