LONDON : Ange Postecoglou will bring up a half century of Premier League games in charge of Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday with the jury still very much out on the Australian's impact at the club. His side are in 10th place in the table ahead of their trip to champions Manchester City and defeat would provoke further debate about Postecoglou's progress. The 59-year-old led Tottenham to fifth place in his first season at the helm - a solid improvement on their eighth-placed finish the season before. But after a spectacular start to his Tottenham reign when they bagged 26 points from their first 10 Premier League games, the subsequent period has been mired in inconsistency. This season they have won five and lost five of their first 11 games with the latest setback coming before the international break when they were beaten 2-1 at home by Ipswich Town. Speaking to reporters on Friday, the former Celtic manager said his team had progressed from last season and that judging them so early in the campaign was unfair, although he admits he faces a crucial period with nine games in 29 days. "I think it's going to be a real pivotal part of the season. If we're still 10th at Christmas obviously people won't be happy, but we might not be 10th," he told reporters. "If we had a beaten Ipswich we'd be third and I reckon this press conference would be a lot different, wouldn't it? I'm not going to let my life be dictated by one result. "I take a sort of wider perspective on these things, because I know how fickle it can be. But we need to address our position for sure. If we're 10th at Christmas, yeah, it won't be great, for sure, absolutely and rightly so there would be a lot of scrutiny around me." Postecoglou insists there has been progress in his first 50 Premier League games in charge after inheriting a squad in need of a major rebuild. His side have produced some scintillating football at times this season in wins against the likes of Manchester United and Aston Villa and beat Manchester City to reach the quarter-final of the League Cup. But there have been too many slip-ups such as losses to Ipswich and Crystal Palace and critics say he is reluctant to bend on his attacking principles. "I think I said I am steadfast and I am clear on some really strong principles that I just won't budge on. But that doesn't mean I don't feel at times I need to adapt in the way I deliver things," he said. Asked for his assessment on his half century, Postecoglou said: "Where did I think we'd be after 50 games? God knows, mate. Could have been a whole lot worse now, but when you look at it in the current prism of 10th, you kind of go, doesn't look good. I understand that, and we have to improve that. "But over the 50 games, I think there's enough there that shows where we are progressing as a team, and we are developing into the team we want. The key is the next 50 games, if they can be better than the first 50, firstly that means I'm still here. But secondly, I think we'll be in a good space."

(ZENIT News / Rome, 12.12.2024).- In the wake of Pope Francis’ creation of 21 new cardinals, a groundbreaking digital platform has been launched, offering unprecedented access to detailed profiles of the Catholic Church’s cardinalate. This innovative project, « Collegio Cardinalizio: Una Rassegna » (The College of Cardinals: A Review), sets a new standard for understanding the individuals shaping the Church’s future, especially as the next conclave approaches. A Modern Lens on an Ancient Institution Developed by an international team of Catholic journalists and researchers led by Vatican expert Edward Pentin and executive director Diane Montagna, the site serves as a comprehensive database for exploring the Sacred College of Cardinals. Supported by Sophia Institute Press and Cardinalis Magazine, this project bridges historical precedent and modern technology to offer a uniquely interactive user experience. The platform provides visitors with a wealth of information, from biographical sketches to analyses of cardinals’ leadership styles in the core roles of sanctifying, governing, and teaching. Users can filter data by geography, age, and ecclesiastical roles, navigate interactive maps, and propose updates to cardinal profiles, making this a living and collaborative resource. Insights into Potential Papal Candidates A particular highlight is the in-depth profiling of 40 prominent cardinals, including those widely regarded as “papabili”—potential successors to Saint Peter. Key figures include: Emerging figures also feature prominently, such as: Notably, African leadership is spotlighted through Cardinal Fridolin Ambongo Besungu of Kinshasa, reflecting the Church’s growing focus on the continent. Reviving a Historical Practice While “Collegio Cardinalizio: Una Rassegna” is pioneering in its digital format, its intent echoes historical traditions. Pentin and Montagna noted that centuries ago, detailed biographies of cardinals were meticulously compiled by scribes and shared among diplomatic circles. Today’s platform aims to replicate this depth of knowledge, albeit on a global and accessible scale. Addressing an Emerging Need The initiative responds to the evolving dynamics within the Sacred College under Pope Francis. Many newly appointed cardinals hail from “peripheral” regions and are less familiar to their peers. With fewer regular consistories and limited opportunities for in-person meetings, the cardinals often lack comprehensive insights into each other’s backgrounds and perspectives. This tool seeks to fill that gap, particularly as the conclave nears. “In an age of information and globalization, it’s paradoxical how little the cardinals know about one another,” observed Montagna. “This resource not only enhances transparency but fosters connection among the Church’s highest leaders.” A Vision for the Future As the project evolves, the platform plans to expand its profiles, integrate multilingual options, and continue refining its database to meet the needs of clergy, media professionals, and laypeople alike. Pentin emphasized the enduring value of the project: “While we avoid speculation about papal elections, our aim is to offer a reliable resource that enables informed perspectives. By fostering familiarity among the cardinalate, we hope this platform supports the Church’s leadership in navigating its critical challenges ahead.” Thank you for reading our content. ( MENAFN - IANS) Seoul, Dec 13 (IANS) South Korean tech giant Samsung Electronics said on Friday it will launch an "extended reality" (XR) headset jointly developed with Alphabet's google and Qualcomm in global markets next year. The extended reality headset is part of wearable devices to be powered by the new version of Google's Android software -- called Android XR -- developed in tandem with Samsung. "The XR headset product will arrive in global markets sometime next year. No further details are available about the product for now," a company spokesperson said over the phone, reports Yonhap news agency. Extended Reality is a blanket term that refers to a range of virtual-, augmented- and mixed-reality technologies. The new headset, code-named Project Moohan, taken from the Korean word for "infinity," will have Google's Gemini chatbot built into its core, allowing users to control their apps with conversational commands and physical gestures. The Samsung headset is equipped with Qualcomm's XR2 Gen 2 chip for mixed-reality devices. Shahram Izadi, Google's vice president of XR, said Android XR has been developed as an open and integrated platform for headsets and smart glasses with screens embedded in their lenses. Google's smart glasses, built on Android XR, are also set to be launched, though the exact timeframe has yet to be decided. Google's new operating system and the Samsung-built headset are expected to challenge Apple's Vision Pro headset and Meta Platforms' smart glasses and virtual reality headsets. Meanwhile, Samsung Chairman Lee Jae-yong expressed his commitment to joining the international community's efforts for safe, innovative and inclusive artificial intelligence (AI) technology at a global summit, the company said. "Beyond impacting industrial innovation and economic growth, AI is fundamentally changing the way we live, work and interact with the world," Lee said in a video conference during the leaders' session of the AI Seoul Summit the previous day, according to Samsung. -IANS na/ MENAFN12122024000231011071ID1108988682 Legal Disclaimer: MENAFN provides the information “as is” without warranty of any kind. Source : UK Defence Intelligence update dated 28 December on X (Twitter) , as reported by European Pravda Details : The update noted that Russia had used strategic and tactical aircraft and ballistic missile systems during the attack. In addition, UK intelligence reported that Russian Black Sea Fleet ships had launched Kalibr missiles while loitering munitions had been used from numerous launch sites. In total, Russia used about 90 missiles and 180 attack drones in the attack. Russian forces targeted Ukraine's critical infrastructure and also aimed to suppress Ukrainian air defences by saturating them with loitering munitions. Quote: "It is highly likely Russia has chosen to take time to build stocks between strikes and then launch in larger, less frequent strike waves, rather than the more frequent smaller attacks conducted earlier in the year," the update said. At the same time, UK intelligence stated that Russia retains the capability and stockpiles to use missiles and drones in smaller numbers "as a punitive measure, with little or no warning". Let change come organically, not by force I have read with interest the various pieces about why Kamala Harris lost this last election in such a decisive manner. Not a landslide by any means, but a decisive loss nonetheless. The rhetorical contortions are nothing short of amazing. She lost for the simple reason that she was an inauthentic, dishonest shill for the progressive left. No one was buying what she was selling. In today’s political landscape, each party pretty much owns its base. What a 45/45 split? Sadly it only about 10% actually decide the vote. The main issue before the people was the progressives obsession with forced social change. We as a society are based on the Judeo-Christian concept. With all the baggage and benefits derived therein. That is a simple fact. The drive to force such radical change so fast was their downfall. Let change come organically. Likely most people don’t have have serious issues with the personal choice of other people. But the aggressive nature of the progressive social warriors and their media allies has probably caused more harm than good to their cause. Let the change come organically. No one wants it forced down their throats. Karl Kunkel, Bloomington Labels divide us It’s now been a month since our national, state and local elections. In reflecting back over the last several months, it seems there was more “name calling” than ever before. There was clearly a lack of respect and simple courtesy to one another. Also, it was evident that we are now using more “labels” on ourselves and others than ever before. In prior generations, the labels often focused on race, gender and our Republican and Democrat political parties. Undoubtedly, some of this individuality has been our own creation, but nothing is wrong with this. The label that really intrigues me is that each generation/decade now needs their own label of x, y, z. The days of young and old have become history. My point in writing this letter is to raise the question of whether all these labels being created are more harmful than helpful. It sure appears that we use more and more labels when we talk about each other. I wonder whether we can all tone down the talk of differences and simply focus on a respect and acceptance for each other. It’s simply showing courtesy to one other. Can we give it a try and eliminate the labels that divide us? Jim Fruin, Bloomington A president-elect without integrity, empathy Once again our nation has chosen a president who chooses to have no integrity or empathy. This is what we have chosen to be not only our leader but also the leader of the free world. All the best to everyone! Randy Rasse, Minier What does CIRA’s future hold? I am writing this letter concerning a lack of flight options at the Bloomington-Normal airport. Why does the Peoria airport offer more destinations than CIRA? It would appear that Bloomington-Normal demographics out perform Peoria in population and job growth. Peoria has 40 daily flight departures and we have 7. I believe its time to hear from the CIRA airport board on exactly what is the goal and future of this beautiful underutilized airport to the citizens of this and surrounding communities is and what can be done to put CIRA back on the fast track as it once was. The report said none of the agency's informants were authorised to enter the Capitol or join the riot, but four did enter the building. The report also found that the FBI failed in the "basic step" of adequately using its field offices across the US to gather intelligence that could have predicted the riot. Some on the right, including House Republicans, have for years promoted a fringe conspiracy theory that the FBI helped to orchestrate the riot. On the day of the riot, thousands of people attempted to storm the Capitol as the 2020 presidential election was being certified. Hundreds have since been arrested and criminally charged for their participation. President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to pardon "most" of the convicted 6 January rioters as soon as he returns to the White House in January. The report, from the justice department's Office of the Inspector General, found that 26 "confidential human sources" - or paid informants - were in Washington on the day of the riot. Three of them had been tasked with gathering information for domestic terrorism cases who might have been going to the rallies on 6 January, one of whom entered the Capitol building. The remaining 23 had not been directed to be in the area and did so on their own initiative. At the time, some were in contact or travelling with members of far-right groups including the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers. Of the 26 in total, four confidential sources entered the Capitol during the riot. Another 13 entered the restricted area around the Capitol - a security perimeter established in preparation for election certification on 6 January. None of the confidential sources who entered the Capitol or its environs were among those criminally charged with trespassing. Confidential sources are different from full-time, trained undercover agents. The justice department defines these sources as those "believed to be providing useful and credible information to the FBI" who warrant confidential handling. In the wake of the riot, the FBI came under scrutiny from lawmakers who questioned the use of informants and whether more could have been done to gather intelligence and prevent the riot from taking place. While the report compiled by justice department inspector Michael Horowitz determined that the FBI had identified a potential for violence that day and took "appropriate" steps, it missed a "basic step" by not canvassing its field officers for potential intelligence. This step, in turn, "could have helped the FBI and its law enforcement partners with their preparations" ahead of the riot. Approximately 1,572 people have been charged criminally in federal court for their participation in the riot. The figure includes nearly 600 charged with assaulting, resisting or impeding law enforcement agents, and 171 charged with using a deadly or dangerous weapon. Trump - who has referred to the rioters as "patriots" and "political prisoners" - said in a recent interview that he is "going to be acting very quickly" to pardon "most" of the people involved in the riot. Despite the president-elect's promise, the justice department has continued to arrest and charge alleged participants in the riot in recent weeks.
