Cash appetites go separate ways in US and EuropePARIS (AP) — Paris Saint-Germain retained a six-point lead at the top of Ligue 1 after a labored 3-0 home win over Toulouse on Friday. The defending champion dominated the first half but it took until the 35th minute to open the scoring. Young Portuguese midfielder João Neves spun to meet a cross from the right and struck a superb half volley from just outside the box. Lucas Beraldo got a second with six minutes remaining when he pounced on loose ball and fired home. Vitinha made it 3-0 in stoppage time when he showed fine footwork inside the box to finish off a quick counterattack. The scoreline was harsh on Toulouse, which came into the game in a more even second half. Only Vitinha’s last-gasp tackle stopped Zakaria Aboukhlal from equalizing after 69 minutes and then Shavy Babicka blazed over from close range a minute later when he should have hit the target. The win was a confidence boost for Luis Enrique’s side ahead of next Tuesday’s Champions League encounter at Bayern Munich. PSG lies in 25th place in the 36-team Champions League table with one win in four matches and outside the playoff spots. The win came immediately after second-placed Monaco beaten Brest 3-2 to briefly close the gap at the top to three points. Brest, which faces Barcelona next week in the Champions League, turned in another inconsistent French league performance and not the sparkling form it has shown in Europe. Brest has struggled in Ligue 1, where it remains 12th, but shone with three wins from four in its first ever Champions League campaign. It was behind after just five minutes on Friday when Maghnes Akliouche scored with a superb airborne volley, and 2-0 down after 24 minutes thanks to Aleksandr Golovin. The Russian striker seized on a poor pass just outside the Brest penalty area and his low shot was perfectly placed to sneak in off the post and give him his first goal in nine league appearances. On-loan Brighton striker Abdallah Sima used his 1.88-meter frame to outjump the Monaco defense four minutes into the second half and cut the deficit but Akliouche restored Monaco’s two-goal cushion when he brilliantly finished a quick counterattack in stoppage time. Ludovic Ajorque got a second for Brest in the sixth minute of added time but it was not enough in a second half most notable for the red card shown to Brest coach Éric Roy. "From education, employment, social settings including sports, service access, racism has such a significant impact on refugees' lives," Refugee Council Deputy CEO Adama Kamara said. "Some say to me they've made such long journeys to get here, if they knew what it would have been like they may not have come." 'Insidious and profoundly damaging': Australia's systemic racism revealed An anti-racism report from the Australian Human Rights Commission , billed as the most comprehensive plan in the nation's history, was delivered to the federal government on Tuesday. It calls for a number of major legal and policy changes such as the introduction of a national framework with 10-year commitments that include acknowledgement of the "systemic and structural nature of racism" and "historical and ongoing impacts of settler colonisation on First Nations peoples". Among the 63 recommendations, the framework calls for political accountability, something Kamara said is vital for the livelihood of refugees. "We've seen time and time again how refugees are used for political football," she said. "It's to the detriment of human rights commitments but also to refugees' lives, all these actions are counterproductive to a belonging society." The council has heard countless stories of people from the African diaspora experiencing racism in the streets, which Kamara said is linked to the way police, the media and politicians have been talking about Sudanese communities and the alleged link to increased crime. "Those comments have caused a lot of damage in how communities see themselves." She said the government now faces the task of tackling the issue head-on, and not shying away from the "hard conversations". "I would like this to not be a matter for the election because then it's about winning votes and not people's lives," she said. Refugees are finding it hard to rent a home in Australia for this 'pervasive' reason The commission also calls for the introduction of a national human rights act and for a positive duty clause to be added to the Racial Discrimination Act, forcing businesses and employers to implement anti-discrimination policies. The framework would also include an agreed national definition of racism for Indigenous people. One of the report's overarching recommendations is for the federal government to lead a national response to racism, beginning with truth-telling and self-determination for Indigenous people. This would include anti-racism lessons in schools and enshrining the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples into Australian law. A spokesman for Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus commended the commissioner and said the government would work through the recommendations. "No Australian should be targeted because of who they are or what they believe," he said. "Australians should be able to live their lives without fear of being attacked or treated differently because of their race."
CANTON, Ohio — If you can find something wrong with the Cavaliers, well, you’re probably nitpicking. And hey, that’s what we do. But the bottom line is the Cavs have been the best team in the NBA through the first 25 games. How have they done it? I joined Kenny Roda on Canton’s WHBC radio to discuss that and a whole lot more. Listen to the full interview in the player directly below: In this particular conversation, we discuss the season debut of wing Max Strus , who played 70 regular-season games last season and started them all. As I wrote earlier, he’s likely to be a minutes restriction as he works his way back this year. We also talk about how the Cavaliers don’t get enough love over their 21-4 start. And not just nationally, but locally as well. But that’s not all. We also discuss the rise of Evan Mobley (offensively), Darius Garland ‘s strong play to start the season, and the positive culture in the locker room. In fact, the vibes are better right now than at any time since I started covering the team back in 2007. Yes, a lot of credit goes to coach Kenny Atkinson, but also to the players themselves. Everyone is willing to admit their mistakes and strive to come back better the next time. As I said in the interview, the Cavs are true championship contender if all this continues. So again, give a listen above and as always, feel free to leave your own thoughts in the comment section below. This article first appeared on Hoops Wire and was syndicated with permission.
NoneThe world’s most populous country is also one of the most attractive for eCommerce investors. “It’s the tip of the spear of growth,” for that sector, EMQQ Global Founder Kevin Carter told CNBC in an interview Sunday (Dec. 22), “not just in emerging markets, but on the planet.” Carter’s company, the report said, is behind the The India Internet ETF, which launched in 2022 and up almost 21% so far this year , as of the end of last week. Among the companies Carter has backed is Zomato , which he referred to as “the DoorDash of India,” and whose stock is up 128% this year. “One of the reasons Zomato has done so well this year is because the quick commerce business blanket has exceeded expectations ,” he said. “It now looks like it’s going to be the biggest business at Zomato.” He added that his confidence lies from the fact that India’s population is only beginning to embrace the digital space. “They’re getting their first-ever computer today basically,” he said, “You’re giving billions of people super computers in their pocket internet access.” India’s eCommerce and quick commerce market has also attracted global retail giants like Walmart and Amazon. As noted here earlier this month, Amazon has begun testing 15-minute-or-less grocery deliveries , part of a wave of companies promising super-fast deliveries of products such as groceries and electronics in India. Amazon aims to focus on launching a program “to offer the largest selection at fastest speeds and greatest value to customers in every single pin-code across the country,” Samir Kumar, country manager of Amazon India, said in a statement to Reuters. That report said that the quick commerce sector in India is expected to exceed $6 billion in annual sales for 2024, up from $100 million in 2020. The Walmart-backed Flipkart is another player in this space, having earlier this year begun a quick commerce pilot that promised grocery deliveries in 10 minutes. The quick commerce model also faces pressures from India’s traditional retailers, who contend they are having trouble competing with the sharp discounts and fast service that these platforms can offer. In October, the All India Consumer Products Distributors Federation, the country’s largest retail distribution trade group, called for an antitrust probe of three of India’s largest quick commerce companies — Zomato’s Blinkit, Swiggy and Zepto — over claims of predatory pricing.
