747 9 live casino Google announces quantum computing chip breakthroughFinance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb on Sunday identified agriculture and Information Technology (IT) as the twin engines to drive Pakistan towards a sustainable economic growth, stressing that the government did not have any magic wand to fix the country's plethora of problems at once. Talking to the media following a meeting with farmers and stakeholders in Kamalia in Toba Tek Singh district, the minister emphasised that the country did not run on charities but on taxes. In this regard, he added, efforts were afoot to eliminate corruption and plug the leakages. The minister reaffirmed the government's commitment to promoting an export-led economic growth and hoped the country would be put on the path to a "sustainable" Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth rate in the next year. "We are an import-based economy. Whenever imports increase, there comes a shortage of dollars, and then we have a balance of payments problem, then we run towards the IMF [International Monetary Fund]," the minister said. "We do not have a magic wand that this [problem] will go away at once. Therefore, we have to tackle it in such a way that there is growth, and the growth is on the basis of exports," he said. "We are very clear agriculture and IT have to lead this country as we move forward," he added. "We should find solution and promote these [IT and agriculture] sectors for sustainable economic development," the minister stressed. He expressed concern that despite numerous research institutions in the agriculture sector, the desired results of higher crop yields could not be achieved. In the last six months, the minister said, the government achieved macroeconomic stability – a crucial foundation for GDP growth. He highlighted the improvement in vital economic indicators, saying that inflation had fallen to a single digit while the interest rate had also come down and was heading towards a single digit. "As the interest rate comes down, it will come down further and go towards a single digit, because doing business at 23, 24% borrowing is one thing, and doing business at 10, 11% or 8, 9% borrowing is another thing," he told the media persons. Tax collection "I will be the last person to say that we have achieved what we had said but building on these achievements, Pakistan's economy is poised to transition towards sustainable growth from 2025 onwards," he added. Aurangzeb reiterated the government's commitment to bringing reforms in taxation, energy, and State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) sectors. He also said that the government planned to simplify taxation process, ensure digitisation, and reduce human intervention. He stressed the need for improving the tax-to-GDP ratio, which currently stood at 9-10%, and aimed to increase it to 13.5%. "The country does not run on charity, the country runs on taxes. We will increase it [tax-to-GDP ratio]. Reforms are under way in this regard," he added. "We are bringing reforms in the institutions. Because of leakages in the tax system, the salaried class is burdened, now the salaried class has reached a point where we cannot go further. Therefore, other sectors will have to be brought into the tax net, everyone will have to pay taxes," he said. However, he warned that there were problems. "We are trying to control them. We are eliminating corruption and leakages," he added. He appealed for national unity for the sake of the country and for the sake of a charter of economy, saying that "we are because of Pakistan." As part of the reforms, the minister continued, the government should have a minimum role in running businesses. Instead, the minister stressed a more robust role of the private sector. He added that the government's role should be reduced to regulating them to prevent monopolies. "The more the government gets out of businesses, the better. The private sector should take the lead and we have to take care of regulation, so that it does not become a monopoly. He warned that government intervention was tantamount to a form of corruption because of licencing. Wherever we intervene, we commit corruption. It means licencing; it means that we do such things for you when you provide us with such things. "It will be better that the government gets out of everything [running businesses]," the minister stated. Aurangzeb expressed the hope that energy tariffs would come down, as efforts were afoot to plug leakages in the distribution companies (DISCOS). He said that the government was determined to go to the doorsteps of stakeholders instead of merely sitting in Islamabad. The Nifty 50 index has risen over 13% year-to-date (YTD). Looking ahead to 2025, analysts maintain a cautiously optimistic outlook for the Indian stock market. The optimism is underpinned by robust domestic economic growth, as India continues to hold its position as the world’s fastest-growing major economy. India's long-term market outperformance is often attributed to factors like domestic flows or robust GDP growth, but the real driver is its superior returns on equity. About one-third of Indian companies have consistently achieved an ROE of over 20%, second only to the U.S. in this regard. When adjusted for the cost of equity, India surpasses most peers, showcasing the strength of its corporate fundamentals. This remarkable performance emphasizes that the true reasons behind India's market success lie in its high-quality returns, rather than the commonly cited growth or capital flow narratives. Venezuela opposition leader says he will return as president

For the past few weeks the American Canyon High School football team was without its star quarterback Mason Harris, who suffered a concussion in the team’s regular season finale. He returned in the North Coast Section Division IV semifinal and his head seemed just right on Friday night. His legs looked even better. Harris — often playing as a running back — danced in the rain like Gene Kelly, rushing for 204 yards and four touchdowns in the Wolves’ 45-12 win over Granada at Wolf Den Stadium. Harris also threw for 65 yards and a touchdown. “Look, we played Casa Grande a month ago in the rain and they beat us. In this rain. We played absolutely horrible,” American Canyon head coach Trevor Hudson said. “All week we didn’t ask for the rain to go away, we wanted more and more. We embraced the rain. We practiced in the rain and we didn’t cut anything short and we dumped balls in water so when we came out for this game we would be prepared. “We showed up and we showed out. But we’re not done. This was just the next step.” The foul and rainy weather didn’t deter Harris, who looked like his old self. “He looks pretty good now,” Hudson said with a huge grin. “He played a hell of a game. He did a fantastic job but most of the team looked good. They came together. They didn’t worry about how big they (Granada) looked on film. We didn’t care about how many games they won or the league they played in. We played through all of that. Now, saying all of that, Granada is a great football team.Their coaches had the team prepared, but tonight they got beat by Wolves.” “I was ready to go before the game even started,” Harris said. “I couldn’t worry about getting hit. I just had to stick to playing how I usually do.” Harris said that running for yards as a tailback instead of a quarterback wasn’t a problem. “Not as much, no, because I’ve been running all year,” Harris said. “It’s become second nature. Just run straight and it always works for the best.” With the win, the Wolves equaled the deepest postseason run in program history — the section final. With Redwood High upsetting top-seeded Ukiah on Friday night, the Wolves’ travel plans are less significant. Instead of a four-hour trip, American Canyon will play Saturday, Nov. 30 at Napa’s Memorial Coliseum with a 7 p.m. scheduled kickoff. In order to get to Napa, the Wolves had to brave the storm on Friday night. With 9:27 left in the first quarter Harris showed he was running on all cylinders with a 44-yard dash down the right sideline for a touchdown to make it 7-0. Five minutes later Harris showed off his arm with a six-yard touchdown pass to Miles Baylor that made it 14-0. Granada answered with a touchdown at the start of the second quarter to bridge the gap to 14-6, but that’s as close as it would get. American Canyon scored on a 32-yard run by Harris to make it 21-6 with 8:19 left in the first half and then added to its lead as time expired in the second quarter on a 28-yard field goal by Edoardo Pelagatti. The Wolves recovered a fumble on the second play of the third quarter and two plays later took advantage of the turnover with Harris’ third touchdown run of the contest, this one a 36-yard romp to make it 31-6. With 7:48 left in the third Harris duplicated his success with another 36-yard touchdown run to make it 38-6. Harris let someone else have some scoring fun in the fourth when Khairee Baker scored on a 56-yard run to make it 45-6. The score gave the Wolves a running clock and eventual 45-12 win. Granada scored its final touchdown as time expired in the fourth. Things got testy in the fourth with a few unsportsmanlike penalties, prompting Hudson to tell his team to not get baited into further penalties that could jeopardize playing time in the championship. Hudson said he’s happy the team won’t be traveling far for the title game, but knows the Wolves are in for a tough battle. “Look, you don’t always get a chance for revenge against a team you got beat by earlier in the year,” Hudson said. “They beat our tail last time and they’re not just going to lay down. We need to be ready. They just won in a mud bowl so they’re going to be even better in phenomenal conditions. They’re going to be ready to go, so we need to be ready to go.”MADRID (AFP) – Venezuela’s opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia has ruled out forming a government in exile, saying in an interview published yesterday that he will return to his country as president in January. The 75-year-old, who the opposition insists beat Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro in a disputed July election, fled with his wife to Spain in September after being threatened with arrest. Asked if he planned to head a government in exile, he told Spanish daily El Pais, “No, no... I am going to be in Venezuela.” “I left Venezuela temporarily. I knew I was going to return... and the moment is January 10, the date of the inauguration,” he added. Gonzalez Urrutia said he was “confident” he will not be arrested if he returns and would not announce the date of his arrival so the authorities in Venezuela will not be able to prevent him from entering the country. Maduro insists he won the election even though the opposition says it can provide proof that he lost decisively. The United States has recognised Gonzalez Urrutia’s claim to victory but Spain and other European Union nations have only refused to accept that Maduro won and called on the Venezuelan government to release voting tally sheets. Maduro is accused of leading a harshly repressive leftist regime, with a systematic crackdown on the opposition.

Jimmy Carter, 39th US president, Nobel winner, dies at 100Phnom Penh, Nov 23 (IANS): Representatives of Asian political parties on Saturday reiterated the significance of global and regional cooperation in enhancing civilisational connectivity, inter-generational solidarity and cultural diversity, said a Phnom Penh statement. Such cooperation will transform cultural assets into resources for peace and reconciliation, the statement said. The statement was issued after the third meeting of the Asian Cultural Council (ACC) of the International Conference of Asian Political Parties (ICAPP), which was held in Phnom Penh, capital of Cambodia. The meeting was attended by representatives of 49 political parties from 28 countries and regions. The representatives supported the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in its endeavours to encourage all stakeholders to fulfill their duty of ensuring the identification, protection, and conservation of their cultural and natural heritage by upholding a culture of respect of civilisations as a compass for a human future. "We emphasised that the Silk Road is millennia-old route of exchanges of trade, culture and religion, as well as dialogue and knowledge between the East and the West that has contributed greatly to the common prosperity of humankind," the statement said. The representatives recognised the lack of intercultural understanding and interfaith dialogue as root causes of extremism and conflicts, intolerance, discrimination, social tensions and political instability in recent years, and emphasised the importance of a multilateral framework as a mechanism to enhance cultural dialogue in promoting better understanding of civilisations, Xinhua news agency reported. They recognised that a culture of innovation is best understood as the adoption of novel solutions, practices and processes to address existing problems and emerging challenges, with the ultimate aim of securing peace and promoting sustainable development. "In this regard, we stressed that digital technology and digitalization can contribute to promoting better appreciation of various civilisations as a foundation of a shared humanity," the statement said.

Then, on October 16, 2024, during the accompanying earnings call, the ASML class action lawsuit alleges that ASML's CFO, defendant Roger Dassen, attributed the poor bookings results to "a reflection of the slow recovery in the traditional [semiconductor] end markets as customers remain cautious in the current environment." Additionally, ASML's CEO, defendant Christophe Fouquet, admitted that the semiconductor industry "recovery will extend well into 2025," leading to "a reduced growth curve in 2025 and an . . . overall reduction of our lithography demand," according to the complaint. The ASML class action lawsuit alleges that on this news, the price of ASML stock fell more than 6%. Appotronics Highlights Role of Laser Technology in Automotive Industry at Prestigious US Trade ConferenceAUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Junior Kyla Oldacre matched her career best with 21 points on near perfect shooting, and No. 5 Texas routed Texas Rio Grande Valley 94-35 on Sunday. Oldacre, a 6-foot-6 backup center, converted all six of her field goal attempts and 9 of 10 free throws. She also had seven rebounds and three of the Longhorns' 21 steals. Madison Booker had 14 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and three steals for Texas (13-1). Starting center Taylor Jones had 11 points, nine rebounds and three blocks. Kade Hackerott led Texas Rio Grande Valley (6-7) with seven points. The Vaqueros shot 27% from the field and committed 37 turnovers. Texas converted the turnovers into 47 points. Texas Rio Grande Valley: The Vaqueros average 16 turnovers a game but matched that by midway through the second quarter. They committed 13 while falling behind 24-5 after the first quarter. Texas: Aaliyah Moore's physical health is something to watch. Moore, a starting power forward, missed her first game this season on Sunday while resting because of tendinitis in her right knee. Moore played with that condition last season but it has been a struggle for her. Texas has only two centers and two power forwards on its roster. After Texas Rio Grande Valley sliced a 19-point deficit to 10 with less than four minutes remaining in the second quarter, Texas finished the half with a 13-1 push, eight from Oldacre, during the final 2:36. The Longhorns outscored the Vaqueros 54-12 in the paint and it could have been worse. The Longhorns missed 12 layups. $1 million per homer? $27,000 a point? $229 per second? Sports is loaded with money oddities If Juan Soto replicates his 2024 performance throughout his $765 million, 15-year deal with the Mets, he'll make roughly $1.2 million for every home run he hits. He's hardly the only superstar athlete earning outrageous sums for each of his accomplishments. Some NFL quarterbacks make more than $3 million per game. Stephen Curry could make roughly $161,000 per 3-pointer. This past regular season, Lionel Messi earned $229 for every second he was on the field with Inter Miami. Is the College Football Playoff bracket fair? Here are some tweaks that would have changed things The committee that chose the 12 contenders for college football’s national title was only worried about ranking the teams. Where those teams landed in the bracket was based on a formula created by conference commissioners. That jumbled up the pairings and made a strong case for tinkering in the future. Some possible tweaks, like reseeding after the first round or not giving conference champions automatic byes, would have resulted in a vastly different tournament this year, Belichick says he's had 'good conversations' with UNC chancellor amid Tar Heels' coaching search Former New England Patriots coach and six-time Super Bowl champion Bill Belichick says he had “a couple of good conversations” with North Carolina Chancellor Lee Roberts amid his discussions about the Tar Heels’ head-coaching job. Belichick appeared on ESPN's “The Pat McAfee Show" on Monday. He said he had spent the 11 months since his departure from the Patriots taking a “longer look” at the college level. He said he had learned a lot and had “a couple of good conversations" with Roberts. UNC fired the program's all-time winningest coach in Mack Brown last month. Cowboys set to host Bengals under open roof after falling debris thwarted that plan against Texans ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The roof at the home of the Dallas Cowboys has opened without incident and will stay that way for a Monday night meeting with the Cincinnati Bengals. It will be the first game with the roof open at AT&T Stadium since Oct. 30, 2022. The roof was supposed to be open three weeks ago for Houston’s 34-10 victory on another Monday night. A large piece of metal and other debris fell roughly 300 feet to the field as the retractable roof was opening. The roof was then closed for that game. Tennessee grabs No. 1 in AP Top 25 after shakeup; No. 3 Iowa State has highest ranking since 1950s Tennessee is the new No. 1 in men's college basketball after a massive shakeup in the AP Top 25. The Vols are No. 1 for the first time since the 2018-19 season. Auburn remained No. 2 and No. 3 Iowa State has its highest ranking since 1956-57. Kentucky rounds out the top five. Tennessee is off to its best start since opening the 2000-01 season 9-0. Georgia QB Carson Beck's status for Sugar Bowl uncertain as he considers treatment options on elbow ATLANTA (AP) — Quarterback Carson Beck’s status for No. 2 Georgia’s Sugar Bowl College Football Playoff quarterfinal is uncertain after he suffered an elbow injury in Saturday’s Southeastern Conference championship game win over Texas. Georgia announced Monday there is no timetable on Beck’s return as he and his family explore treatment options. Georgia coach Kirby Smart said Sunday the team was awaiting results of tests. The school did not announce details of the injury. Punter Brett Thorson will need season-ending surgery after injuring his non-kicking leg. Backup Gunner Stockton likely would start in the Sugar Bowl if Beck is unable to play. Another final-second victory puts the Chiefs in prime spot to secure AFC's No. 1 seed: Analysis A thunderous doink helped the Kansas City Chiefs gain some breathing room in the race for the No. 1 seed in the AFC after the Buffalo Bills fell short despite Josh Allen’s spectacular performance. The fight for the top spot in the NFC stayed close as the Minnesota Vikings and Philadelphia Eagles kept pace with the Detroit Lions. Four weeks remain in the NFL regular season to determine the playoff picture. There’s a clear leader in the fight for the AFC’s bye. The two-time defending Super Bowl champion Chiefs are 12-1 and in excellent position to secure home-field advantage throughout the playoffs after a 19-17 win with a last-second field goal over the Los Angeles Chargers. No. 19 Tennessee back in women's AP Top 25 after year out of poll; UCLA, UConn remain 1-2 Tennessee is back in the AP Top 25 at No. 19, ending the school’s longest drought in the 48-year history of the women’s basketball poll. The Lady Vols (7-0) had not been ranked since Nov. 27, 2023, a span of 22 polls. Since the rankings began in 1976, Tennessee has been in the Top 25 in 779 of 870 total weeks. UCLA, UConn and South Carolina remain the top three teams and Oklahoma has cracked the top 10. Georgia Tech and N.C. State entered the rankings while Illinois, Louisville and Alabama fell out. The portal period closes on Dec. 28. Oklahoma QB Jackson Arnold, Texas State running back Ismail Mahdi, Miami (Ohio) wide receiver Reggie Virgil and Ohio State QB Devin Brown were among the first players who entered the portal. The sophomore Arnold passed for 1,984 yards with 16 touchdowns and six interceptions and ran for 560 yards and four scores at Oklahoma. Mahdi led the nation with 2,169 all-purpose yards last season. Brown entered the transfer portal after three years as a backup. Saquon Barkley is chasing Eric Dickerson's NFL season rushing record. Can he do it? PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley is closing in on the NFL season rushing record. Barkley set the Eagles' franchise record when he rushed for 124 yards and pushed his season total to 1,623 yards in a win against Carolina. Barkley also maintained his pace to break Eric Dickerson’s NFL single-season rushing record of 2,105 yards, set in 1984 with the Los Angeles Rams. Barkley is averaging 124.8 yards per game. At that pace and with one more game to play than Dickerson had, Barkley would become the top single-season rusher in NFL history. He needs 483 yards over the final four games to top Dickerson’s 40-year-old record. Barkley is on pace for 2,122 yards, just 17 yards beyond Dickerson’s 2,105 total. The 39th president of the United States has died at 100. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution confirmed the news with a post on X, stating the son of the former president said his father had died around 3:40 p.m. ET in his Plains home. People across the country and the world are reflecting on former President Jimmy Carter and his life, which was full of achievements. He died at the age of 100 at his longtime home in Plains, Georgia . While the 39th president will be remembered for setting a national energy policy and working on peace accords, it was his establishment of an agency aimed at responding to disasters that continues to impact many communities today. Since the country’s formation in the 1700s, local governments have faced disasters in which the needed response has been considered too great to handle. The federal government started providing aid and assistance in the early 1800s, but it wasn’t until Carter’s signing of Executive Order 12127 that an agency was solely tasked with responding to hurricanes, floods, earthquakes and other disasters. Before Carter was sworn in on Jan. 20, 1977, the country was reeling from natural disasters, with poor governmental responses that only made the catastrophes worse. In 1962, an extratropical cyclone slammed into the mid-Atlantic and became one of the most destructive storms ever to impact the states. The year 1964 brought the most powerful earthquake to ever strike North America, with a 9.2-magnitude quake shaking the ground underneath Alaska. Over the next five years, communities along the Gulf Coast would face double disasters from major hurricanes Betsy and Camille. (Photo by James Edward Bates/Biloxi Sun Herald/Tribune News Ser All these disasters caused extensive devastation and were responsible for killing hundreds of people, but a common theme emerged – poorly coordinated responses . According to the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum , the president had universal support from governors and interest groups to form an agency to combat the problem. With the political will in hand, the Federal Emergency Management Agency was born on April 1, 1979. The agency was tasked with emergency management response and merged the Defense Civil Preparedness Agency, Federal Preparedness Agency, Federal Disaster Assistance Administration, Federal Insurance Administration, U.S. Fire Administration and half-a-dozen other programs. Gordon Vickery , a highly respected firefighter, who rose through the ranks to become the fire chief in Seattle, was selected as interim head of the then-2,400-person-strong agency. In the hours before the agency’s ramp-up, an accident at the Three Mile Island Nuclear Power Plant in Pennsylvania overshadowed the initial days of the agency and drew attention to inadequate preparedness surrounding highly volatile energy plants. Dangerous and now deadly severe weather is sweeping through the South Saturday evening, just hours after multiple tornadoes left damage in the southeastern part of Texas. Bill Bunting, Deputy Director of the National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center join LiveNOW's Austin Westfall to give the latest weather update. The event would trigger one of many expansions of powers for the newly-formed agency. Carter signed Executive Order 12148 , which directed FEMA to develop a plan to respond to nuclear emergencies. Now, the agency, once solely tasked with emergency management responses, also gained civil defense responsibilities. These changes were far from the last for the agency with a then-$600 million budget. The position of leading FEMA appeared to become a preverbal carousel with three leaders in just two months. Stability among government ranks took a further hit when Carter lost his reelection campaign to former California Gov. Ronald Reagan. The changing of the guard at the White House did little to stop the trend of temporary appointments, as 1981 brought three additional heads to the agency. In addition to the change at the top, a political landslide gave the Regan administration the political power to change course on many aspects of government operations and that included FEMA. According to an agency history , developments in Cold War diplomacy contributed to more wartime hazard planning. The leader at the time, retired Army officer Louis Giuffrida, made it to be the longest-serving head of FEMA, but questionable actions and congressional investigation ultimately led to his resignation in 1985. The agency once again fell into the pattern where it was anyone’s gig, but a disaster known as Hurricane Hugo in 1989 served as a reminder of the importance of a functioning FEMA. North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper called the ongoing disaster "catastrophic," as the state manages its worst flooding in a century. Search and rescue teams from 19 states, as well as the federal government, are on the ground trying to help residents. Cell phone service is down, and the governor's office reports more than 200 people have been rescued from flood waters so far. FEMA's Acting Director of Response and Recovery, Keith Turi, joins LiveNOW from FOX with the latest operation details. Hugo was the strongest storm to strike the U.S. coastline in two decades and came ashore in the Carolinas as a Category 4 hurricane with estimated winds of at least 135 mph. The storm produced $11 billion in damage, and FEMA was in charge of the response. A government history of the time period stated: "FEMA, the agency in charge of the response process, received most of the blame; FEMA, not Hurricane Hugo, was referred to as the real disaster." Again, the agency was the subject of congressional ridicule, with U.S. Sen. Ernest Hollings calling FEMA "the sorriest bunch of bureaucratic jackasses I’ve ever known." The administration of President George H.W. Bush pledged to set the course right on FEMA and searched high and low for its next head. The administration put their faith in Wallace Stickney from New England. No one could foresee that the agency would be tasked with its largest disaster in more than two years – Hurricane Andrew . The major hurricane made landfall on Aug. 24, 1992, as a Category 4 hurricane in South Florida. A NOAA reanalysis in 2004 upgraded the costliest hurricane ever to a Category 5. Similar to Hurricane Hugo, the response to the catastrophe was considered inadequate and had local, state and even some federal officials asking if the agency’s response made the disaster even worse. A federal investigation into the agency’s response found that plans for disasters were not adequate, local governments were overwhelmed and the movement of materials and personnel into the impact zone was too slow. The administration of President Bill Clinton brought a slew of new faces into the federal government, including James Lee Witt. The Arkansan knew a thing or two about emergency services and was appointed as the sixth permanent administrator of FEMA. Similar to other leaders of the agency, Mother Nature did not provide a grace period for Witt, as hurricanes, massive floods and West Coast earthquakes left few areas of the country unaffected. One of the largest disasters was the Great Flood of 1993, which impacted nearly a dozen states and caused damages of more than $15 billion across the Midwest. During the recovery, officials lauded FEMA’s response and confidence grew in Witt being the right person to lead the agency. Former U.S. president Jimmy Carter remains in home hospice after a series of hospital stays. Thomas Whalen, an associate professor of Social Sciences at Boston University joined LiveNOW from FOX's Josh Breslow to discuss Carter's legacy. A series of disasters, including the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City on April 19, 1995, proved the agency was at the beckoning of any municipality. Not long after the deadliest act of domestic terrorism in U.S. history, Clinton raised the FEMA position to cabinet-level status, underscoring the growing importance and reliability of the agency. During a 1998 interview , Witt was asked what adjustments were made that enabled outsiders to view FEMA in a more positive light versus the ridicule and scorn that had plagued it. "We worked hard at creating a more customer-focused agency," Witt said. "A major initiative was to provide customer service training to all FEMA employees, including senior management. This was a huge undertaking." After Witt’s reign, the agency would go on to have many ups and downs, including what news organizations reported was a botched response to Hurricane Katrina , which struck the Gulf Coast on Aug. 29, 2005. The major storm resulted in more than 1,300 fatalities and a damage figure that topped a 2023-cost-adjusted price tag of $191 billion. REPORT: 90% OF COUNTIES IN US EXPERIENCED AT LEAST 1 DISASTER IN PAST DECADE On significant anniversaries, FEMA leaders usually take to social media to reflect on the agency’s beginning, but on a daily basis, trainees are exposed to a message that reflects upon Carter’s role in its establishment. Located within FEMA training documents is a pledge that the commitment bestowed on the agency by Carter will never change. The passage reads: "On April 1, 1979, President Jimmy Carter signed the Executive Order that created the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). From day one, FEMA has remained committed to protecting and serving the American people. That commitment to the people we serve and the belief in our survivor-centric mission will never change." In many ways, the agency continues to follow one of the first lines ever uttered by the 39th president. During his inaugural address on that cold, 28-degree day in January, Carter boldly told the crowd of thousands: "To be true to ourselves, we must be true to others." The line was part of a 1,228-word speech that the White House Historical Association said was focused on rejecting mediocrity and restoring trust in the federal government. Read more of this story from FOX Weather.WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump on Thursday named Pam Bondi, the former attorney general of Florida, to be U.S. attorney general just hours after his other choice, Matt Gaetz , withdrew his name from consideration. Bondi is a longtime Trump ally and was one of his lawyers during his first impeachment trial, when he was accused — but not convicted — of abusing his power as he tried to condition U.S. military assistance to Ukraine on that country investigating then-former Vice President Joe Biden. Bondi was among a group of Republicans who showed up to support Trump at his hush money criminal trial in New York that ended in May with a conviction on 34 felony counts. She's been a chair at the America First Policy Institute, a think tank set up by former Trump administration staffers. “For too long, the partisan Department of Justice has been weaponized against me and other Republicans - Not anymore,” Trump said in a social media post. “Pam will refocus the DOJ to its intended purpose of fighting Crime, and Making America Safe Again.” Trump’s son Donald Trump Jr. told Fox Business on Sunday that the transition team had backups in mind for his controversial nominees should they fail to get confirmed. The swift selection of Bondi came about six hours after Gaetz withdrew. Gaetz stepped aside amid continued fallout over a federal sex trafficking investigation that cast doubt on his ability to be confirmed as the nation's chief federal law enforcement officer. That announcement capped a turbulent eight-day period in which Trump sought to capitalize on his decisive election win to force Senate Republicans to accept provocative selections like Gaetz, who had been investigated by the Justice Department before being tapped last week to lead it. The decision could heighten scrutiny on other controversial Trump nominees, including Pentagon pick Pete Hegseth , who faces sexual assault allegations that he denies. “While the momentum was strong, it is clear that my confirmation was unfairly becoming a distraction to the critical work of the Trump/Vance Transition,” Gaetz, a Florida Republican who one day earlier met with senators in an effort to win their support, said in a statement. “There is no time to waste on a needlessly protracted Washington scuffle, thus I’ll be withdrawing my name from consideration to serve as Attorney General. Trump’s DOJ must be in place and ready on Day 1," he added. Hours later, Gaetz posted on social media that he looks “forward to continuing the fight to save our country,” adding, “Just maybe from a different post.” Trump, in a social media post, said: “I greatly appreciate the recent efforts of Matt Gaetz in seeking approval to be Attorney General. He was doing very well but, at the same time, did not want to be a distraction for the Administration, for which he has much respect. Matt has a wonderful future, and I look forward to watching all of the great things he will do!” Last week, Trump named personal lawyers Todd Blanche, Emil Bove and D. John Sauer to senior roles in the department. Another possible attorney general contender, Matt Whitaker, was announced Wednesday as the U.S. ambassador to NATO. Bondi, too, is a longtime loyalist. She has been a vocal critic of the criminal cases against Trump as well as Jack Smith, the special counsel who charged Trump in two federal cases. In one radio appearance, she blasted Smith and other prosecutors who have charged Trump as “horrible” people she said were trying to make names for themselves by “going after Donald Trump and weaponizing our legal system.” If confirmed by the Republican-led Senate, Bondi would instantly become one of the most closely watched members of Trump’s Cabinet given the Republican’s threat to pursue retribution against perceived adversaries and concern among Democrats that he will look to bend the Justice Department to his will. A recent Supreme Court opinion not only conferred broad immunity on former presidents but also affirmed a president’s exclusive authority over the Justice Department’s investigative functions. Bondi would inherit a Justice Department expected to pivot sharply on civil rights, corporate enforcement and the prosecutions of hundreds of Trump supporters charged in the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol — defendants whom Trump has pledged to pardon . It’s unlikely that Bondi would be confirmed in time to overlap with Smith, who brought two federal indictments against Trump that are both expected to wind down before the incoming president takes office. Special counsels are expected to produce reports on their work that historically are made public, but it remains unclear when such a document might be released. In 2013, while serving as Florida attorney general, Bondi publicly apologized for asking that the execution of a man convicted of murder be delayed because it conflicted with a campaign fundraiser. Bondi said she was wrong and sorry for requesting then-Gov. Rick Scott push back the execution of Marshall Lee Gore by three weeks. Before she ran for state attorney general in 2010, Bondi worked for the Hillsborough County state attorney. Associated Press writers Zeke Miller, Michelle L. Price, Lisa Mascaro, Mary Clare Jalonick and Adriana Gomez Licon contributed to this report.
