By MICHELLE L. PRICE NEW YORK (AP) — Chad Chronister, Donald Trump’s pick to run the Drug Enforcement Administration, said Tuesday he was withdrawing his name from consideration, becoming the second person selected by the president-elect to bow out quickly after being nominated for a position requiring Senate confirmation. Sheriff Chronister, the top law enforcement officer in Hillsborough County, Florida, said in a post on X that he was backing away from the opportunity, which he called “the honor of a lifetime.” “Over the past several days, as the gravity of this very important responsibility set in, I’ve concluded that I must respectfully withdraw from consideration,” Chronister wrote. He did not elaborate, and Trump’s transition team did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment. Chronister follows former Republican congressman Matt Gaetz , Trump’s first pick to serve as attorney general, in withdrawing his name for a post in the administration. Gaetz withdrew following scrutiny over a federal sex trafficking investigation that cast doubt on his ability to be confirmed as the nation’s chief federal law enforcement officer. Trump’s pick of Chronister for the DEA job drew backlash from conservatives, who raised concerns over his actions during the COVID-19 pandemic and his saying that his office “does not engage in federal immigration enforcement activities.” In March 2020, Chronister arrested the pastor of a megachurch who held services with hundreds of people and violated a safer-at-home order in place aimed at limiting the spread of the Covid virus. “Shame on this pastor, their legal staff and the leaders of this staff for forcing us to do our job. That’s not what we wanted to do during a declared state of emergency,” Chronister said at the time. “We are hopeful that this will be a wakeup call.” U.S. Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky, was among those airing public complaints, saying Chronister should be “disqualified” for the arrest. Others flagged comments Chronister made in a video about Florida’s immigration laws that he released in 2023 that circulated again online after Trump named him last weekend. We do not target individuals based on their immigration status. That’s the authority of federal agencies.” Trump has made a sweeping crackdown on immigration a central focus of his campaign and his aims for his coming administration. As Google’s Waymo scales up its self-driving car service in San Francisco, some passengers have reported incidents of harassment and safety concerns while riding in the company’s driverless vehicles. The Washington Post reports that San Francisco has become a testing ground for Waymo’s robotaxi service, with the company’s sensor-equipped vehicles becoming an increasingly common sight on the city’s streets. While many riders have embraced the convenience and novelty of driverless transportation, some have encountered a new form of public harassment that highlights the challenges of relying on autonomous technology in complex urban environments. In recent months, several Waymo passengers, mostly women, have reported incidents in which their driverless rides were followed, obstructed, or even approached by individuals attempting to enter the vehicle. These encounters have left riders feeling vulnerable and exposed, as the absence of a human driver has made it difficult for them to quickly change routes or seek assistance. Stephanie, a San Francisco tech worker, recounted a frightening experience in which a car carrying several young men followed her Waymo vehicle late one evening, with the occupants honking and yelling inappropriate comments. Unable to instruct the robotaxi to change its route and avoid leading the pursuers to her home, Stephanie called 911, only to be told that the police could not send a car to a moving vehicle. Other riders have shared similar stories, including encounters with pedestrians who have attempted to enter driverless vehicles at red lights and individuals who have deliberately obstructed the path of Waymo cars. While the company maintains that such incidents are extremely rare, they underscore the challenges of programming autonomous vehicles to respond to the unpredictable nature of human behavior. Waymo has stated that it takes these events seriously and that support agents are available to assist riders who experience harassment or threats to their safety. However, some passengers feel that the company could do more to improve its response to such incidents, such as providing closer coordination with emergency services and allowing riders greater control over a vehicle’s route in potentially dangerous situations. As robotaxi services expand in San Francisco and other cities, operators like Waymo will need to find ways to balance the benefits of driverless technology with the need to ensure passenger safety and security. This may involve developing more sophisticated sensing and response systems that can detect and react to potential threats, as well as establishing clearer protocols for coordination with law enforcement and emergency services. Canada’s ambassador to the U.S. insists it’s a good sign U.S. president-elect Donald Trump feels “comfortable” joking with Canadian officials, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Trudeau made a surprise visit to Mar-a-Lago Friday — accompanied by a small Canadian delegation — to meet with Trump. The trip came just days after the incoming president threatened to implement 25 per cent tariffs on all imports from Canada and Mexico until the border countries stop the flow of illegal drugs and migrants across the borders. According to U.S. network Fox News, Trump joked during the meeting in Florida that if said tariffs debilitated the Canadian economy — as the prime minister conveyed to him — perhaps Canada should become the country’s 51st state. Canadian politicians responded to the comment on Tuesday, calling it lighthearted teasing. Trump later posted what appears to be an artificially generated image depicting him standing on a mountaintop overlooking the Canadian wilderness, with a large Canadian flag next to him, with the caption “Oh Canada!” Kirsten Hillman — in an interview on CTV News Channel’s Power Play on Tuesday — said while she hadn’t seen the social media post, the gathering in Florida had “a really happy, joyous kind of atmosphere.” “(Trump) made jokes, other people at the table made jokes,” Hillman said, who was part of the Canadian delegation to Mar-a-Lago, though she wasn’t seated at the same table as Trump and Trudeau during the three-hour dinner. “People were making jokes, which, actually, I have to say, I find to be reassuring that people are that comfortable with each other, that they're teasing.” “Any good joke always hits a little bit of a nerve, and certainly, president(-elect) Trump is one who likes to hit a nerve,” Hillman told host Vassy Kapelos. “So here's what I would say to Canadians: let's focus on the work that we have ahead of us and the work that has already started with the Trump administration.” Hillman also highlighted the significance of Trudeau travelling to Florida for a meeting with Trump within days of the initial tariff threat. “Let's focus our attention where it should be, which is on the importance that this dialog is serious and it's continuing, and not on the fact that the president(-elect) is enjoying this this joking moment,” she said. Can Canada escape tariffs? Two senior government sources told CTV News following Friday’s meeting that it was conveyed to the Canadian delegation the tariffs are unavoidable in the immediacy, but solutions in the longer term are on the table, particularly if the border is better secured. When asked whether she believes those in Trump’s orbit are aware of the degree to which the tariffs would impact both the Canadian and American economies, Hillman said she’s “deeply confident” they are. According to the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, Trump’s threat of blanket 10 per cent tariffs would have an economic impact totally about $30 billion a year in this country. Last week, University of Calgary economist Trevor Tombe wrote on social media that adjusting for a 25 per cent tariff would mean the Canadian economy takes an annual real GDP hit of around 2.6 per cent, costing Canadians about $2,000 per person. Hillman pointed to the retaliatory tariffs Canada implemented during Trump’s first term as “very difficult for the United States.” “I think though, that we have to remember that he is someone who does believe in tariffs as an economic policy tool,” she added. “So our task is to demonstrate to him that that economic policy tool, whether he believes it's a good thing for the United States, vis à vis other partners, when it comes to applying it to Canada, it is going to hurt Americans.” When asked whether she believes Canada can escape the imposition of those tariffs, Hillman said she hopes so. “I think that is the quid pro quo that was put forward in that (first social media) post,” the ambassador said. “That is what we are working on with them, that was the nature of the conversation at Mar-a-Lago.” Hillman also called it a “huge opportunity” for Canada to work with the Americans on issues of common concern, namely the border. “I think that one thing that everybody can recognize is that it is very hard to pre-judge what president-elect Trump might do in the future.” When pressed on whether and when Canada may impose counter-tariffs, Hillman said “we’re not there yet.” She added that while Canada will have to be prepared to take retaliatory measures, she hopes it doesn’t come to that. In 2018, during Trump’s first term as U.S. president, Trump triggered a nearly year-long trade war with Canada after imposing a 25 per cent tariff on Canadian steel products and 10 per cent on Canadian aluminum. In response, Canada unveiled a 25 per cent counter tariff on a long list of American steel and aluminum products, along with a 10 per cent surtax on miscellaneous U.S. goods including coffee, prepared meals and maple syrup. Those retaliatory tariffs were eventually lifted in 2019 after Canada, the U.S. and Mexico reached a deal. Trump once again announced plans to impose a 10 per cent tariff on Canadian aluminum in August 2020. In a statement at the time, Freeland said “Canada intends to swiftly impose dollar-for-dollar countermeasures,” but one month later, Trump hit pause on those tariffs amid the looming presidential election later that year. Trump went on to lose that election to Joe Biden. You can watch Hillman’s full interview in the video player at the top of this article
Trump has pressed for voting changes. GOP majorities in Congress will try to make that happen ATLANTA (AP) — Republicans in Congress plan to move quickly in their effort to overhaul the nation’s voting procedures, seeing an opportunity with control of the White House and both chambers of Congress. They want to push through long-sought changes such as voter ID and proof-of-citizenship requirements. They say the measures are needed to restore public confidence in elections. That's after an erosion of trust that Democrats note has been fueled by false claims from Donald Trump and his allies of widespread fraud in the 2020 election. Democrats say they are willing to work with the GOP but want any changes to make it easier, not harder, to vote. Americans are exhausted by political news. TV ratings and a new AP-NORC poll show they're tuning out NEW YORK (AP) — A lot of Americans, after an intense presidential election campaign, are looking for a break in political news. That's evident in cable television news ratings and a poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. The poll found nearly two-thirds of Americans saying they've found the need recently to cut down on their consumption of political and government news. That's particularly true among Democrats following President-elect Donald Trump's victory, although a significant number of Republicans and independents feel the same way. Cable networks MSNBC and CNN are really seeing a slump. That's also happened in years past for networks that particularly appeal to supporters of one candidate. Israel strikes Houthi rebels in Yemen's capital while the WHO chief says he was meters away JERUSALEM (AP) — A new round of Israeli airstrikes in Yemen have targeted the Houthi rebel-held capital of Sanaa and multiple ports. The World Health Organization’s director-general said the bombardment on Thursday took place just “meters away” as he was about to board a flight in Sanaa. He says a crew member was hurt. The strikes followed several days of Houthi attacks and launches setting off sirens in Israel. Israel's military says it attacked infrastructure used by the Houthis at the international airport in Sanaa, power stations and ports. The Israeli military didn't immediate respond to questions about the WHO chief's statement. The US says it pushed retraction of a famine warning for north Gaza. Aid groups express concern. WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. officials say they asked for — and got — the retraction of an independent monitor's warning of imminent famine in north Gaza. The internationally Famine Early Warning System Network issued the warning this week. The new report had warned that starvation deaths in north Gaza could reach famine levels as soon as next month. It cited what it called Israel's “near-total blockade” of food and water. The U.S. ambassador to Israel, Jacob Lew, criticized the finding as inaccurate and irresponsible. The U.S. Agency for International Development, which funds the famine-monitoring group, told the AP it had asked for and gotten the report's retraction. USAID officials tell The Associated Press that it had asked the group for greater review of discrepancies in some of the data. India's former prime minister Manmohan Singh, architect of economic reforms, dies aged 92 NEW DELHI (AP) — India’s former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, widely regarded as the architect of India’s economic reform program and a landmark nuclear deal with the United States, has died. He was 92. The hospital said Singh was admitted to New Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences late Thursday after his health deteriorated due to “sudden loss of consciousness at home." He was “being treated for age-related medical conditions,” the statement added. A mild-mannered technocrat, Singh became one of India’s longest-serving prime ministers for 10 years and earned a reputation as a man of great personal integrity. But his sterling image was tainted by allegations of corruption against his ministers. What is known about a plane crash in Kazakhstan that killed 38 of 67 people on board The crash of an Azerbaijani airliner in Kazakhstan has killed 38 of 67 people on board. Azerbaijan Airlines’ Embraer 190 was en route from Azerbaijani capital Baku to the Russian city of Grozny in the North Caucasus on Wednesday when it was diverted for reasons that aren’t fully clear yet. It crashed while making an attempt to land in Aktau in Kazakhstan after flying east across the Caspian Sea. Officials in Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Russia haven't commented on a possible cause of the crash pending an official investigation. Some commentators pointed out holes in the plane's tail section pictured after the crash as a sign that it could have been fired upon by air defense systems. Ukraine's military intelligence says North Korean troops are suffering heavy battlefield losses KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukraine's military intelligence says North Korean troops are suffering heavy losses in Russia's Kursk region and face logistical difficulties as a result of Ukrainian attacks. The intelligence agency said Thursday that Ukrainian strikes near Novoivanovka inflicted heavy casualties on North Korean units. Ukraine's president said earlier this week that 3,000 North Korean troops have been killed and wounded in the fighting in the Kursk region. It marked the first significant estimate by Ukraine of North Korean casualties several weeks after Kyiv announced that North Korea had sent 10,000 to 12,000 troops to Russia to help it in the almost 3-year war. How the stock market defied expectations again this year, by the numbers NEW YORK (AP) — What a wonderful year 2024 has been for investors. U.S. stocks ripped higher and carried the S&P 500 to records as the economy kept growing and the Federal Reserve began cutting interest rates. The benchmark index posted its first back-to-back annual gains of more than 20% since 1998. The year featured many familiar winners, such as Big Tech, which got even bigger as their stock prices kept growing. But it wasn’t just Apple, Nvidia and the like. Bitcoin and gold surged and “Roaring Kitty” reappeared to briefly reignite the meme stock craze. Holiday shoppers increased spending by 3.8% despite higher prices New data shows holiday sales rose this year even as Americans wrestled with still high prices in many grocery necessities and other financial worries. According to Mastercard SpendingPulse, holiday sales from the beginning of November through Christmas Eve climbed 3.8%, a faster pace than the 3.1% increase from a year earlier. The measure tracks all kinds of payments including cash and debit cards. This year, retailers were even more under the gun to get shoppers in to buy early and in bulk since there were five fewer days between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Mastercard SpendingPulse says the last five days of the season accounted for 10% of the spending. Sales of clothing, electronics and Jewelry rose. Why this Mexican American woman played a vital role in the US sacramental peyote trade MIRANDO CITY, Texas (AP) — Amada Cardenas, a Mexican American woman who lived in the tiny border town of Mirando City in South Texas, played an important role in the history of the peyote trade. She and her husband were the first federally licensed peyote dealers who harvested and sold the sacramental plant to followers of the Native American Church in the 1930s. After her husband's death in 1967, Cardenas continued to welcome generations of Native American Church members to her home until her death in 2005, just before her 101st birthday.Bill Belichick casts heavy shadow over Fenway BowlAitken Spence Travels wins three top accolades at Sri Lanka Tourism Awards
Van Nistelrooy’s first game in charge ended with a 3-1 win over West Ham, thanks to goals from Jamie Vardy, Bilal El Khannouss and Patson Daka. The Dutchman, who was out of work for just two weeks following his four-game spell as Manchester United interim boss, only started on Sunday so was happy to end a hectic three days in style. “It has been very busy getting to know everyone, start working together,” he said. “Everybody was involved with that and helping, it was busy, long days, but worth it. I was focused on the game and what the game needed, the subs, the half-time talk, so focused on the moment, so I am going to get myself a little beer and reflect on the last three days.” He endured a dream start as Vardy scored after just 98 seconds with El Khannouss and Daka adding second-half goals. It was by no means one-way traffic, though, as West Ham – who scored a consolation through Niclas Fullkrug at the death – had 30 shots on goal. But Van Nistelrooy saw enough to think he can deliver on his objective of keeping the Foxes in the Premier League. “I am very happy, if you look at the result – and it is about the result – it was a great night, three points, three good goals and also very effective. Ruud at the wheel 🛞 pic.twitter.com/eVgIwWAcYw — Leicester City (@LCFC) December 3, 2024 “Overall the game of course we have seen and how dominant West Ham were at certain stages and what they created, that is a fact and something we have to look at. “Overall, what I expected of the players going forward was togetherness and hunger, energy and spirit in this team that is fighting for every inch. “Eleven players on the pitch who are fighting as a foundation to play the rest of the Premier League. I saw that completely with every single player that started and came on. “That’s the foundation we have to build on, without that it will be impossible to get where we want to go. I am very happy about that.” West Ham’s hierarchy will have seen what impact a managerial change can have as the jury remains out on Julen Lopetegui, with away fans making their feelings clear by chanting “You’re getting sacked in the morning”. Lopetegui expects to keep his job but forthcoming games against his former club Wolves, Bournemouth, Brighton and Southampton could determine the Spaniard’s future. “The only thing that I am worried about is to go to training session tomorrow and stand up the players and prepare the next challenge,” he said. “We have one month of December with a lot of matches and I am sure with this attitude we are going to achieve many more points. “I believe in the players. I am confident that tomorrow we are going to be ready to prepare the next match. “Understanding the question, but at the end of the season maybe we talk in another way. There are a lot of matches and points, a lot of things can happen. “I believe in these players and team, I am sure the position is going to be much better. They are only words but we have to work a lot to achieve this.”It’s Monday, December 23, and the Washington Wizards (4-22) and Oklahoma City Thunder (22-5) are all set to square off from Paycom Center in Oklahoma City. The Thunder have the second-ranked defensive net rating in December and will challenge Sarr from three (31.2% allowed in Dec.) after he’s made 42.9% of his triples this month. Sarr averages 4.0 potential assists per game in December, so he’s not much of a threat to set up his teammates either. NASA project NEOWISE ends after cataloging objects around Earth for over a decadeManmohan Singh, a soft-spoken scholar of economics, who defeated poverty with education to rise to the highest echelon of politics, and transformed the Indian economy by unshackling growth as finance minister before becoming the country’s first Sikh prime minister, died in New Delhi on Thursday night. He was 92. Singh served with distinction as the deputy chief of the erstwhile Planning Commission and governor of the Reserve Bank of India before completing a landmark tenure as a Union finance minister who unveiled watershed reforms in 1991 that inaugurated India’s journey as a major world economy. The country’s 14th prime minister is survived by his wife, Gursharan Kaur, and three daughters Upinder Singh, Daman Singh, and Amrit Singh. “With profound grief, we inform the demise of former prime minister of India, Dr Manmohan Singh, aged 92,” said a press statement by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, where the ailing leader was admitted earlier in the day with complications. The statement said he was being treated for age-related illnesses when he fell unconscious at home on Thursday. He was admitted to the hospital at 8.06pm and was declared dead at 9.51pm. As PM between 2004 and 2014, he instituted a string of social protection schemes that boosted rural wages and bolstered marginalised communities, stood his ground to forge the Indo-US civilian nuclear deal in 2008 that presaged a close relationship between the world’s two great democracies, and won global praise for his handling of the 2008 global financial crisis. But the second half of his tenure was bruised by a blizzard of corruption allegations, policy paralysis, and deep dissension inside his government that tarnished his legacy and led him to famously pronounce that history will be kinder to him. Also Read: Manmohan Singh, the astute economic thinker who leaves behind a lasting legacy “India mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished leaders, Dr. Manmohan Singh ji. Rising from humble origins, he rose to become a respected economist. He served in various government positions as well, including as finance minister, leaving a strong imprint on our economic policy over the years. His interventions in Parliament were also insightful. As our Prime Minister, he made extensive efforts to improve people’s lives,” said Prime Minister Narendra Modi on X. “Manmohan Singh ji led India with immense wisdom and integrity. His humility and deep understanding of economics inspired the nation...I have lost a mentor and guide. Millions of us who admired him will remember him with the utmost pride,” Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi said on X. Born on September 26, 1932, in a village in the Punjab province in what is now Pakistan, Singh was an emblem of the extraordinary strides made by independent India. He studied at Panjab University, and then the University of Cambridge, where he earned a degree in economics, before going to Oxford to secure a D Phil. He said in an April 210 interview that he spent the first 10 years of his life in a dusty village with no doctor, school, electricity or clean drinking water. “In my childhood, I had to walk a long distance to go to school. I read under the dim light of a kerosene lamp,” Singh said. “I am what I am today because of education. I want every Indian child, girl and boy, to be so touched by the light of education.” In 1971, Singh became the economic adviser in the commerce ministry before being appointed as the chief economic adviser in the Union finance ministry in 1972. He then served as the 15th RBI governor between 1982 and 1985. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1991, and retired earlier this year on account of his frail health. In 1991, then PM PV Narasimha Rao appointed Singh as the finance minister. With the economy lurching from one crisis to another, the fiscal deficit ballooning, decades of tepid growth hurting the poor and stymying investment, and a balance of payments crunch tarnishing India’s global reputation, Singh had his task cut out. His budget speech that June was a watershed moment that banished a generation of byzantine laws, yanked the country on to the global economic highway, and birthed the middle class. “No power on earth can stop an idea whose time has come. I suggest to this august House that the emergence of India as a major economic power in the world happens to be one such idea,” he said in the milestone address. Known for his ability to broker compromises and genial nature that earned his respect across the political divide, Singh became India’s 14th PM in 2004 after then Congress chief Sonia Gandhi refused the position due to a controversy about her birth country. As prime minister, Singh propelled a period of high growth while simultaneously helping build a shield of social protections with the right to education and information and the rural jobs scheme. In his first term, the reticent academic helped manage an unwieldy and chaotic coalition. His strongest moment as leader came ahead of the 2008 Indo-US nuclear deal that upset the Left and threatened his government. Undaunted, he pushed on with the deal that was the precursor to a strong bilateral relationship and managed to save his government by cobbling together support from regional outfits. “I urge you to join us and strengthen our hands in our attempt to build a stronger and more open economy that is also committed to the principles of democracy and pluralism. India and the US are, in that sense, on the same side of history,” he wrote in HT in September 2004. In the 2009 general elections, the Congress was buoyed by an unexpectedly strong performance that saw the party cross 200 seats – a showing attributed largely to Singh’s deft handling of the economy that sheathed it from the worst effects of the 2008 economic crisis that ravaged other developing countries. But the wheels started coming off his administration shortly after its famous victory. As the ugly head of one corruption scandal after another – the Commonwealth Games scandal, the 2G scam, the coal block allocation case, among others – senior members of the government openly duked it out. The lack of a coherent response from the United Progressive Alliance only strengthened the perception that it was an administration in drift. Clad in his trademark sky-blue turban and white tunic, Singh still commanded respect for his erudition but was increasingly cornered in a system with dual power centres and seen as powerless. A string of terror attacks left him even more vulnerable, as did an anti-corruption protest by Anna Hazare that captivated young people and the 2012 December 16 gang rape case that galvanised women. “Undoubtedly, history shall judge you kindly, Dr. Manmohan Singh ji!” Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge said in a post on X. “I mourn the loss of a lifelong senior colleague, a gentle intellectual and a humble soul who embodied the aspirations of India, having risen through the ranks with unwavering dedication. I am proud to have been a part of his Cabinet as Labour Minister, Railway Minister and Social Welfare Minister. A man of action rather than words, his immense contribution to nation-building will forever be etched in the annals of Indian history,” he said. Still, his legacy will be burnished with many credentials, revolutionising the life of the ordinary citizen by unlocking the economy primary among them. As US President Barack Obama noted in his memoir, Singh was a man of uncommon decency and wisdom who was a “fitting emblem” of the progress made by India. “A member of the tiny, often persecuted Sikh religious minority who’d risen to the highest office in the land, and a self-effacing technocrat who’d won people’s trust not by appealing to their passions but by bringing about higher living standards and maintaining a well-earned reputation for not being corrupt.”
They are only words but we have to work a lot to achieve this.”Disability ministers will ‘champion’ inclusion and accessibility, says Timms
OTTAWA — Canada has again breached its years-long policy and voted in support of a United Nations motion critical of Israel, based on concerns about the viability of a two-state solution. "The dynamics in the broader region show very clearly that conflict management, as opposed to genuine conflict resolution, is not in fact a sustainable path to peace, security and prosperity," Canada's ambassador to the United Nations, Bob Rae, told a UN plenary Tuesday. For years, Canada backed Israel in votes at the international body, but the federal Liberals changed that policy a year ago, citing concerns over policies that undermine Ottawa's decades-long policy of advocating for an eventual Palestinian country that would exist in peace alongside Israel. That change also came amid widespread concern from humanitarian groups and legal experts about Israel's compliance with international humanitarian law in its campaign in the Gaza Strip. UN member states passed a motion 157 to 8, with seven abstentions, reaffirming the illegality of Israeli settlements in occupied Palestinian territories and condemning the use of force against Palestinian civilians. The motion passed Tuesday also calls for a peace conference, and is similar to motions brought before the UN multiple times. It called out "terror against civilians on all sides" but did not name Hamas or any Palestinian militant group, drawing criticism from Israel advocates. Rae said the motion should have been more balanced, but Ottawa wanted to signal its concern about the viability of a Palestinian state. "We voted in favour of this resolution, like many, many others (did) to signal our firm commitment to the two-state solution," he said. Rae reiterated condemnation of the October 2023 attack by Hamas against Israel, and called for the return of all hostages including the body of Canadian citizen Judih Weinstein Haggai. "All Palestinians deserve to be led by a legitimate and representative government without the participation of a terrorist organization such as Hamas," Rae told the UN plenary. Conservative foreign affairs critic Michael Chong decried today's vote as singling out Israel, writing on the platform X that supporting the motion would "reverse Canada's long-standing position on Israel." He said that a Conservative government would be "ensuring alignment with our closest democratic allies." Tuesday's vote was supported by the U.K., Japan and most European Union states. The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs says the Liberals had voted against similar motions for almost a decade. "Today's reversal to vote yes instead represents an abandonment of Canada's long-standing, principled foreign policy," the group wrote on X.
