(Reuters) - Microchip Technology lowered its third-quarter revenue forecast on Monday and announced the closure of its wafer manufacturing factory in Arizona, as the chipmaker looks to restructure under interim CEO Steve Sanghi. Microchip has been through a tumultuous few quarters, grappling with slowing orders for its automotive chips as carmakers, navigating an uncertain macro economy, clear existing inventory which they built up to avoid a supply crunch. The company now expects revenue to be close to the lower end of its previous forecast of $1.03 billion, below analysts' expectations of $1.06 billion as per data compiled by LSEG. Shares of Microchip fell over 3.5% in extended trading after being around 3% higher at close. The company's stock has fallen 22% so far this year. Microchip expects to shut down the Arizona facility in the September 2025 quarter and generate annual cash savings of around $90 million. "With inventory levels high and having ample capacity in place, we have decided to shut down our Tempe wafer fabrication facility that we refer to as Fab 2," said interim CEO Sanghi, who came into the role after Ganesh Moorthy retired from the top job at the end of November. However, it's a never-ending fight with cybercriminals constantly returning to the popular mobile ecosystem with new social engineering tricks and security threats to scam users out of money. The mobile research team at McAfee recently detected a new SpyLoan campaign, with several apps designed to trick people into asking for quick loans. The analysts uncovered fifteen malicious Android SpyLoan apps, with a collective total of eight million downloads. Google has already removed the apps from the Play Store, but the SpyLoan threat will eventually researchers fully expect the malware to return. SpyLoan PUP (potentially unwanted programs) apps exploit social engineering tactics to try to collect sensitive user data. The apps masquerade as legit financial tools designed to loan users money after going through a rapid approval process. Users get less than the promised loan amount but must still repay the original sum in full, plus steep additional fees. Google removed the last batch of SpyLoan PUP apps in December 2023, when users downloaded over a dozen malicious apps 12 million times. The newest SpyLoan apps McAfee discovered target users in specific regions of the world, including Latin America, Southeast Asia, and Africa. The apps require validation through a one-time password, a trick the cyber-criminals use to confirm the apps were downloaded in one of the targeted regions. After the validation process, the apps ask users to provide a wide range of personal and sensitive information, including ID documents, employee information, and banking data. The apps also want to access the user's contact list, call logs, location, and more. Data exfiltration extends to all text messages, GPS location info, OS details, sensor logs, and other on-device information. McAfee said the bad actors use this data to harass and blackmail the victims. The criminals can go as far as sending death threats over delayed payments or calling family members to push their extortion attempts further. They will even resort to public shaming, which can significantly impact personal and professional relationships. The researchers say SpyLoan apps are designed to exploit users' trust and "financial desperation." Google should have enough security mechanisms to prevent SpyLoan apps from returning to the Android ecosystem, but the criminals are still doing business just fine. Asking for money through some second-rate smartphone app doesn't seem like the brightest idea, but as PT Barnum said, "There's a sucker born every minute," and that's precisely what keeps these apps alive.

Some 140 years after its first trailblazing luxury train chugged out of Paris’s Gare de l’Est bound for Constantinople, the Orient Express is having something of a rebirth. Arguably the most interesting in a flurry of announcements from the brand is the launch of Orient Express Silenseas, a new collection of yachts that are a collaboration between three French giants: global hospitality group Accor, luxury goods titan LVMH and shipbuilders Chantiers de l’Atlantique. Orient Express Corinthian is the world’s largest sailing yacht. The finished product looks like the lovechild of the fanciest superyacht and the most elegant sailing boat. The first yacht to be completed, Orient Express Corinthian, which at 220m long, with three 100m-high sails, is the world’s largest sailing yacht, won’t be taking paying guests until 2026, but the first images of its interiors have been released. Luxury hotel groups such as Ritz Carlton, Four Seasons and Aman have all announced launches of luxury yachts this year . But while they may be fabulous, they are smallish cruise ships, not yachts. Evrima, for example, the first in the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, offers 224 suites. Then there’s Four Seasons, whose first “yacht”, when it launches in 2026, will have 14 decks and 95 suites. With just 50 cabins, Aman at Sea, which launches in 2027, is the closest of the offerings to a superyacht and also in scale to the 54-suite Orient Express Corinthian. But what Orient Express Corinthian has that none of the others do is sails. The interiors team took inspiration from classic French liners such as SS Normandie. There’s something much cooler and more adventurous-seeming about a great big yacht with sails than an all-bling one with just an engine. This is something that hasn’t escaped Jeff Bezos, who spent $500 million on his three-masted boat Koru , which at 127 metres was the world’s largest sailing yacht – until now. Inspired by the golden age of the French Riviera, Orient Express Corinthian has been designed by French architect and designer Maxime d’Angeac, who has also worked on a new Orient Express train that will launch in France around the same time. The two will combine on certain itineraries. Sustainability was central to the design process, seen through the minimal use of leather, no plastic and lots of walnut wood panelling. “The pillars of Orient Express are art deco, geometric patterns and strong colours, which both train and boat have,” says d’Angeac. “Train interiors can be much darker as this makes them feel cosy and luxurious. The boat [has] much more space and height, so its design feels more Riviera, like a villa on the Côte d’Azur. I’ve also replaced the really small windows you usually get in yacht cabins with huge, durable windows.” Orient Express Corinthian will have five restaurants, eight bars including a speakeasy, two swimming pools including a lap pool, an amphitheatre cabaret space and a private recording studio. In-room spa treatments and meditation sessions will also be available. The boats will spend summers in the Mediterranean and the Adriatic and winters in the Caribbean, with dining, shopping and cultural experiences offered at multiple stop-offs along the way. Mouth taping – sealing the mouth with tape to keep it closed while at rest – has made its way across Instagram and TikTok , and into season seven of the popular reality show Love is Blind . The trend is touted as a way to stop snoring, treat sleep apnoea and improve sleep. Preliminary studies suggest mouth taping may help treat habitual open-mouth breathing , snoring and some mild cases of obstructive sleep apnoea, which occurs when the upper airway becomes blocked repeatedly while sleeping, causing people to stop breathing temporarily. But there is not enough research on how effective it is, who might benefit from it and who should avoid it, experts say. Mouth breathing can temporarily alter the anatomy in the throat, making it narrower and prone to collapse. Credit: SHUTTERSTOCK “In all likelihood, the isolated effect of mouth taping is mild,” says David Kent, an associate professor of otolaryngology and head and neck surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Centre. The idea behind mouth taping is to encourage nose breathing while sleeping. People are meant to breathe through their nose as it is the body’s air filtration system. Air is breathed in through the nostrils and into the nasal cavity where the mucus membrane captures debris, particles and pathogens, and involuntary responses such as sneezing expel pollutants. The nasal cavity also warms and humidifies the air before it enters the lungs, to prevent damage to the respiratory system. When allergies, illness or structural abnormalities inhibit effective nose breathing, however, people may open their mouths involuntarily as they sleep to get air. Mouth breathing can temporarily alter the anatomy in the throat, making it narrower and prone to collapse. Long term, it can be associated with dental problems such as cavities and gum disease; sleep disorders; and decreased lung function and an exacerbation of symptoms in people with asthma. In one study , 20 people with mild sleep apnoea and a main complaint of snoring participated in a home sleep test, sealing their mouths with silicone hypoallergenic tape before bed. Those with nasal obstruction used medication and a nasal spray to alleviate symptoms before taping their mouths shut. Sixty-five per cent of them saw a significant improvement in their snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea. What else you should know: In most cases, mouth taping is considered a low-risk treatment. While people who cannot breathe properly through the nose because of anatomical or health issues may find mouth taping uncomfortable, it is not likely to pose an immediate danger for most people. When unable to get enough air, most people will wake up and remove the tape, experts say. But people should consult their doctor, particularly when they do not breathe well through their nose and are breathing through their mouth while awake, including while exercising, says Robson Capasso, chief of sleep surgery at the Stanford University School of Medicine. Mouth taping should not be used on children or adults who are unable to remove the tape on their own. The main concern is people may believe mouth taping is an alternative to well-studied treatments such as continuous positive airway pressure, or CPAP, machines, for breathing disorders such as sleep apnoea, which can lead to sleep deprivation and fatigue, and increases certain cardiovascular risks , experts say. “There may be a medical condition that’s triggering the mouth breathing,” says Beth Malow, a professor of neurology and pediatrics, and the director of Vanderbilt University’s sleep division. Sales on Black Friday reached $16.4 billion (online and in stores), and this was a 9% increase from the year before.
